Joseph Vessecchia is an MBA student at the University of Rochester who enjoys volunteering in his community. Among Joseph Vessecchia’s favorite free time activities is exploring the outdoors through hikes in the local area.
One popular destination is Abraham Lincoln Park, which is situated on Irondequoit Bay. Accessible year round, the park is known for its hilly terrain. With a landscape ranging from woods to the Allens Creek Valley Wetlands, the location on the bay attracts birds that include the occasional bald eagle.
One highlight of the park is a dock that offers views of the Irondequoit Bay Bridge. A four-mile-long inlet of Lake Ontario, the bay was the site of Fort des Sables, built by French traders in 1720.
From the late 19th century onward the area became a popular tourist destination that was connected by railroad line and featured lodging and amusement rides at the Sea Breeze resort. The now idyllic suburban location was once populated by Victorians and held the nickname "Coney Island of western New York.”
